Updated list on classmates who have died

It's taken Internet searches, a few trips to the Berne Library and a stop at a funeral home to update the information on classmates who have died. There are still some missing pieces that we hope someone reading this can supply. If you have information, leave a comment on the blog or send an email to southadamsclassof1970@gmail.com. Your assistance is appreciated!

In order of death:

Marilyn Patterson died July 29, 1971 at the age of 19 from injuries from a car accident that happened three weeks earlier on Highway 27 four miles north of Berne. She was born July 10, 1952.

Randy Toland died June 8, 1973 at the age of 21 after accidentally being electrocuted in Korea where he was stationed with the US Army. He was born on February 14, 1952. Note: two sources list February 14 as the date of birth, one source says February 13. Can anyone confirm either date?

Kenny Jones -- at this point no data has been found on Kenny but we think he died in the 70s. Can someone provide us with more information? It was probably reported in the Berne Tri Weekly but if someone can supply at least a year and possibly the month it will speed up the microfilm search!

Bruce Weimer died June 24, 1986 at the age of 33 a few months after being diagnosed with cancer. He was living in Dallas, Texas and working as a computer analyst at the time of his death. He was born October 15, 1952.

Karen Haines Eubank, a resident of Linn Grove, died October 15, 1985 at the age of 33 following a two year battle with cancer. She was born May 10, 1952.

John Doty died in Germany on January 24, 1994 at the age of 42 while serving as a staff sergeant in the Army. He was born on December 30, 1951.

Rev. Thomas Schindler died March 7, 2000 at the age of 47. His obituary states he was "a kind and gentle man who affected many lives and will be greatly missed." Tom was born July 7, 1952.

John Muselman died October 5, 2004 at the age of 52 from complications due to lung cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Berne, worked in the family business, and served on many community boards. He was born September 29, 1952.

Danny Thornton died December 27, 2008 at the age of 56. He was living in Berne at the time of his death. Danny was born February 28, 1952.

We Need Your Help!

Did you know from the time we entered high school until graduation on May 24, 1970 there were 162 people who walked the halls with us in one grade or another? Of those 162 classmates, 131 are listed in the graduation program. We want classmates to know they are welcome to attend our reunion, even if they only attended school with us for one year.

The committee has been busy trying to get the word out through social media but we need your help. There are still many people who don't know about the reunion scheduled for September 25-26. Below is a list of individuals who haven't been contacted. Look through this list and check if you might be able to contact that person through your Facebook contacts, email addresses or a quick phone call. Then let us know who to check off our list. With the cost of postage, sending out letters will quickly go through the amount currently in the class account. Plus, many of the addresses from 2010 won't be accurate.

Your help is greatly appreciated! Who on this list are you willing to contact?

Another Name Added

Although we don't like adding names to our list of classmates who are no longer with us, we do appreciate Judie Sprunger reminding us that Karen Haines died some time ago. If you look again at the list in the January blog, you will see dates have been added next to John Muselman's name. If you can fill in any information for the other people listed, including Karen, please send an email to southadamsclassof1970@gmail.com.

We are hoping everyone will know about our reunion by the end of this month so plans can be made to attend the September 25-26 get-together. "Like" us on Facebook, send an email or leave a comment on the blog page as evidence the word is getting out. Be sure to include the names of those you have told about the reunion. Right now we can only confirm 26 classmates know the dates and activities that will take place to celebrate our 45th. This means we have a long way to go! The committee is counting on your help.

In Memory

As the committee compiles the list of classmates, we are reminded of those who have died. Our list includes:

  • Kenny Jones
  • John Muselman:  9/29/1952 - 10/05/2004
  • Marilyn Patterson
  • Tom Schindler
  • Randy Toland
  • Bruce Weimer

Is there someone we have missed? Use the comment section below or send an email to southadamsclassof1970@gmail.com to let us know.

Now we're working on the list of classmates who at one time or another were part of our class but not necessarily senior year. We want to welcome these individuals to our 45th reunion. For example, off and on through our twelve years of school, Joyce Burkhalter attended school with us while her family was home on furlough from India. Joyce was a sophomore the last time she was with our class. Then there are some who attended school with us for many years but moved before senior year. At least two in that category are Janet DiGerolamo and Kevin Hanni. The list goes on. In fact it is a little surprising how much turnover there was during our high school years.

If you're still in contact with someone who was part of our class but didn't graduate with us, extend am invitation to that classmate to join us in September.

Saturday, December 13, 2014

Mark your calendar for Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26, 2015 to celebrate our 45th Class Reunion. The reunion is open to friends and classmates of the Class of 1970 and their guests. The committee is planning many events with the list below giving you an idea what will be happening. Details will be shared with you through this blog as they are completed. Feel free to comment on what is being planned and send us other ideas.

The first event starts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night in the event center at the Clock Tower Inn on the north edge of Berne. This is shaping up to be an evening that makes it easy to interact with lots of classmates. It will be casual and fun with stress-free team games. There will be a small fee to cover the cost of a picnic style meal. Soft drinks are provided but feel free to BYOB.

Several events are being planned for Saturday:
  • Men's informal breakfast at a local restaurant; pay and order off the menu
  • Golf Scramble at Wabash Valley Golf Club in Geneva; going golf rates
  • Ladies Brunch from 9:30-11:30 a.m. (location to be determined); small charge for food
  • Bowling from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Spare Time Lanes in Berne (create your team and compete against others OR for those who bowl once or twice a decade, randomly join a team of your classmates and have a great time OR be a spectator and be amazed or amused by the bowling skills of those courageous enough to participate); bowling and shoe rental fees paid individually; volunteers will bring munchies but beverages must be purchased at the bowling alley
  • Catered dinner, 7:00-10:00 p.m.; Geneva Community Center, caterer and cost to be determined
The goal is to have 80% of our classmates attend at least one of these events.

Leave a quick comment or just your name so we know you're aware of the dates. We're using technology as much as possible but will send information to classmates who don't use social media.

Looking forward to a great weekend,
Your Committee:
Lynette Graber Augsburger
Carol McKean Buckingham
Terri Habegger Coolman
Lora Lehman Flueckiger
Maribeth Wulliman Smitley
